TYPE OF ROOF SHINGLES
Whether you are going to build a new roof or re-build the old one, the first thing you have to do is to choose the type of roof shingles. Choice of available shingles is huge; manufacturers produce them in varieties of shapes, colors and styles. Prices also vary so anyone can find the right roofing material. When choosing type of roof shingles consider not only the price but life span, durability, maintenance and energy efficiency, too.
If you are reshingling the roof, you can just replace your broken and damaged shingles with new ones or you can opt for completely different material.
One of the most popular and most commonly used roofing materials is asphalt shingles. They can be organic (cellulose) based or inorganic (fiberglass) based. They are available in different styles; you can choose between classic three tab shingles or architectural shingles for more dimensional look of the roof. This durable roofing material can last 20 to 30 years. If needed, you can easily do simple repairs yourself. Asphalt shingles are not expensive but they are not environmental friendly.
Clay tiles are expensive roofing material and require experienced roofer for installation. This highly durable material withstands the climate conditions. Clay tiles are natural temperature regulator; clay tile roof helps reducing the temperature inside the house in the summer. You do not need to use air conditioners so much and that lowers your energy costs. This type of roofing material is water and fire resistant but it is very heavy and requires strong roof structure.
Concrete tiles are made of cement and sand. They are cheaper then clay tiles but have the same characteristics. Concrete tiles are resistant to water, fire and wind, they will not rot and require little maintenance. Like clay tiles, they are heavy and require strong support.
Slate is natural roofing material. It is very durable, waterproof and fire resistant material with excellent aesthetic characteristics. Slate can last 100 years or even more and requires little maintenance. It comes in variety of colors (green, grey, purple) and textures. This is expensive and heavy material, which requires extra support for the roof.
Wood shakes and shingles are made of cedar or pine. Shakes are thicker and have rough surface; shingles are thinner and with smooth surface. Wood is costly roofing material, which gives your home warm, rustic appearance. You have to maintain and clean it properly; if you do that, your wood roof can last up to 40 years. Bad side of the wood shakes and shingles is that they are not fire resistant.
Metal roofs are very light, water and fire resistant and environmental friendly. They require little maintenance and are cost effective. You can expect your metal roof to last 50 years. Metal roofs can be made of steel, copper or aluminum. They come in metal panels or as individual shingles made to imitate slate, wood or clay.
